What is delivery in the IT industry?

It encompasses all activities involved in fulfilling customer requirements, from initial planning and design to implementation, deployment, and ongoing support and maintenance. Delivery in the IT industry aims to ensure that IT projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the satisfaction of the client or end-user.

As such, delivery in the IT sector can be anything between Project Management to user training and support.

What are IT delivery models?

IT delivery models are the methods or approaches that are employed by IT service providers to deliver their services. These methods vary depending on what the client seeks from the project’s development.

Some clients might seek a more relaxed approach, with less overview of the project’s development, allowing them to focus on their core business, without worrying about the management of IT solutions. On another hand, some client’s might want complete ownership of the project, and might only contact an IT consulting provider to leverage their project from a recruitment standpoint. Either end of spectrum is valid, as is every solution in between, that is why IT solutions provider vary their delivery options.

1.    Time and Materials

Time and Materials as a delivery model stands for any type of business agreement in which the client agrees to pay the provider by the time spent on a given project, as well as for any materials or resources used during the course of the project.

When compared to fixed price contracts, Time and Materials allows for greater flexibility in billing and adaptability during the project’s trajectory. As such, this IT delivery model is usually preferred for projects where the full scope is not completely understood upfront.

2.    Team Extension

Team Extension is a delivery model in which the IT service provider increases the client’s existing staff, adding additional professional to their already existing team.

This IT delivery model allows the client team flexibility and scalability, allowing to add new positions to the project’s team as the project moves along. This means a greater cost-benefit for the client, as well as a reduction in time-to-market.

3.    TaaS

Team as a Service or TaaS, is a delivery model in which the service provider exponentiates their recruitment resources and capacity to build a dedicated development team designed specifically to meet the client’s needs.

This delivery model allows for a greater team scalability and adaptability than team extension, as the team is design from scratch with a specific project with outlined requirements in mind. Moreover, this IT deliver model allows clients to have access to latest market trends and new technologies, as professionals can be chosen from a greater talent pool, by relying on an IT consulting company’s recruitment resources.

4.    IT Managed Services

IT managed services refer to the practice of outsourcing certain IT functions or responsibilities to an IT service provider. These services are typically delivered on an ongoing basis and are designed to proactively manage and support the IT infrastructure and systems of an organization.

The advantages presented by IT managed service providers are, mostly, the management of SLAs and KPIs, as well as the continuous accompaniment and follow-up of the project, allowing for a greater level of efficiency.

5.    Turnkey Projects

Turnkey projects refers to when a client contracts a service provider to deliver a project from start to finish, giving the IT solution provider complete authority over the project’s development.

This is the best option for clients that seek a hassle-free solution to meet their specific needs without having to manage the intricacies of project execution themselves. This approach allows clients to leverage the expertise and resources of the provider to achieve their objectives efficiently and effectively.
